I picked up the following story from Adams County, Ohio newspaper: the People's Defender. Reported December 30, 2009, "Donna Sue Groves' idea of a quilt barn trail took root and has since blossomed across the state of Ohio and into at least 26 states. In April, Groves will be awarded the Governor's Award for the Arts, not just for her quilt barn idea, but for community development and participation, especially in the Appalachian region."
The biography for Ms Groves on the Ohio Arts Council web site (http://www.oac.state.oh.us/) states in part: "Groves irrepressible spirit demonstrates each day that one person can make a difference sharing by her knowledge, vision, and love for the arts. She has built deep trust and collaboration in communities across the state and nation by living her motto of "giving people a hand up, not a hand out." Her ongoing collaborative work to celebrate and raise awareness of the unique gifts, talents and cultural traditions of Appalachian Ohio embody the very spirit of participation and community development. "

I am deeply humbled and appreciative of the honor bestowed on me by Ohio’s Governor, Ohio Citizens for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council for my work in Appalachia Ohio and rural America.
The ever growing and flourishing quilt barn trails across the nation have given me much joy!! I am very proud of the volunteers and celebrate their hard work and the beauty that they have created for their communities. Hopefully the trails are generating income for their artists, farmers, entrepreneurs and local businesses!
Happy New Year to you and your family – may 2010 bring you happiness, health and wealth.
